St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ypsilanti, MI 12 months 1 Student Physician Assistant Residency Programs at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital-Ann Arbor (SJMH-AA) Two postgraduate residency programs are available for PAs interested in Cardiothoracic Surgery. The two tracks include: Cardiothoracic Surgery (CTPA) & Cardiothoracic Critical Care (CTCC). These residencies are offered by SJMH-AA in conjunction with IHA Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeons. The program provides the graduate physician assistant with an opportunity to obtain advanced training in cardiothoracic surgery and critical care. Each residency program is a 12-month didactic and clinical training program for licensed, board-certified PAs who wish to specialize in the management of cardiothoracic surgery patients. It expands upon the basic training of the PA in diagnosis and management of conditions common to cardiothoracic surgery patients. Each residency has a unique focus depending on the applicants’ interests.

A 6-semester, 24-month professional program that leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences and a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies and qualifies graduates to take the NCCPA exam. The program is offered at both the Bay Shore campus and the Winthrop Hospital Extension Center. The two are equivalent programs whose curriculum is designed to educate students to function as Physician Assistants delivering high quality health care to all patient populations. Montefiore Medical Center – Albert Einstein College of Medicine Bronx, NY 14.5 months 5 Students Postgraduate Residency for Physician Assistants in Surgery Montefiore’s Physician Assistant residency is the oldest postgraduate residency program in the country. In 1971, just six years after the Physician Assistant profession was founded, Montefiore became the first hospital to include PA’s as house officers on inpatient surgical services. Those PA’s quickly became an integral part of the surgical team at Montefiore and their clinical experience was formalized into a 12 month residency in general surgery and surgical specialties. In 1978, a pre-internship didactic phase was added in order to provide a firm scientific foundation for the clinical phase of the program. Brown Alpert Medical School Providence, RI 12 months Emergency Medicine Physician Extender Development Program Emergency Medicine Physician Extender Development Program, or EMPED, is a 12-month post graduate training program involving University Emergency Medicine Foundation (UEMF) faculty and senior physician extenders to support a comprehensive emergency medicine training program. The program utilizes three hospitals as sites for orientation, training, and clinical rotations for newly graduated or non-emergency medicine trained physician extenders.
