Program description

Mayo School of Health Sciences offers a 12-month postgraduate Physician Assistant Fellowship in Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Arizona. This is the only accredited fellowship offered in the U.S. for physician assistants who wish to specialize in otolaryngology.

This is a comprehensive educational program providing training for physician assistants in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. Fellows receive clinical and surgical experience in a renowned health care institution focusing on advancements in patient care, education and research. This opportunity will equip the fellow with the skills necessary to provide the highest quality of care to patients with a diverse array of ailments.

Throughout the year, the physician assistant fellow engages in didactic courses, journal club discussions, research-based compositions, outpatient medicine, hospital-based medicine and surgical practices.

Two applicants are accepted to the program each year, with the academic year lasting from the first Monday in October through the end of September the following year.

Program goals

The physician assistant fellow in otolaryngology:

Develops a broad knowledge base of ear, nose and throat (ENT)-related illnesses in outpatient clinical and inpatient hospital settings
Utilizes evidence-based medicine practices to develop differential diagnoses and respective treatment plans
Gains proficiency in the evaluation of the airway and the management of an airway emergency
Becomes proficient in the diagnosis and management of head and neck cancers
Develops the verbal skills needed for effective communication with consulting physicians, nursing staff, patients and patient families
Effectively manages patients beginning with the initial outpatient consultation, leading through intraoperative and inpatient management, and concluding with postoperative follow-up
Participates in the education and training of rotating physician assistant students
Attains surgical skills including sterile prep, suturing, knot tying, surgical instrumentation, and surgical first assisting during head and neck procedures
Performs minor office procedures
Assists in inpatient and emergency on-call duties
Accreditation

The Mayo Clinic Physician Assistant Fellowship in Otolaryngology is nationally accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The fellowship is also recognized by the Association of Postgraduate Physician Assistant Programs (APPAP).

Facilities

The Mayo Clinic campus in Scottsdale is centered around a beautiful, five-story outpatient clinic. This modern facility contains extensive exam rooms, an outpatient surgery center equipped for general anesthesia, a full-service laboratory, pharmacy, patient education library, endoscopy suite, and a 188-seat auditorium for patient, staff and student education programs. Services in numerous medical and surgical disciplines are provided, including outstanding programs in cancer treatment and organ transplantation.

The Department of Otolaryngology — Head & Neck Surgery/Audiology in Arizona provides evaluation, management and surgical services for problems pertaining to the ear, nose, sinus, mouth, throat, head and neck.

Diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients include evaluation of voice disorders, fiber-optic upper aerodigestive system examination, video laryngoscopy, sinus endoscopy, reconstructive and cosmetic facial surgery, screening for tumors of the head and neck, orthognathic reconstruction, electronystagmography, dynamic posturography, brainstem-evoked response testing, and clinical audiology.

Graduation and certification

Upon successful completion of the fellowship, the graduate will receive a certificate of completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences.

Hours

For the majority of the fellowship, the learning schedule includes 10-hour days, five days a week. The fellow takes shared ENT call an average of eight times a month, including overnight call and at least one weekend each month.

Class size

Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits two fellows into the Physician Assistant Fellowship in Otolaryngology. This ensures that fellows receive a comprehensive educational experience with close one-on-one instruction.
