DMC Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine PA Fellowship

The Physician Assistant fellowship program is a 12 month didactic and clinical training program that will both model and compliment our current orthopaedics fellowship, primary care fellowship, and surgical residency programs established at the Detroit Medical Group.

The fellow will have access to a wide variety of physicians during his or her training as well as state of the art equipment and resources.

Our multi-specialty orthopaedics group consists of 18 attending physicians, comprised of surgeons and primary care sports medicine doctors, as well as 4 physician assistants.

Purpose
To provide the graduate Physician Assistant a unique and comprehensive educational curriculum to achieve advanced training in orthopaedic surgery, non-operative sports medicine, and injury prevention.

Program Goals and Objectives

Excellent and appropriate patient care is priority – always.
Optimize efficiency in the management of patient injury in both the clinics and operating suites. Assist in the development of patient care ‘processes’ and ‘protocols’ that maximizes each patient’s timely recovery.
Work as a team with the other physicians, PAs, therapists, residents, fellows, nurses, medical assistants, radiologic and surgical techs, and all other ancillary staff – all play a role and all are important to the eventual outcome of the patient.
Upon completion, will have an in-depth understanding of multiple subspecialties within orthopaedics, demonstrate highly effective physical exam skills, critical thinking, decision making, and operative techniques including first assist.
Retain highly qualified and educated PAs who wish to continue enhancing their skills and education.

Curriculum

Our program will consist of a 12 month integrated didactic and clinical curriculum. Our didactics will be based around our current orthopaedic surgical residents and sports medicine fellows. Our clinical rotations will be grouped into 4 week modules based on subspecialty. The fellows will participate in outpatient clinics, inpatient rounding, first-assist in the operating room, exposure to radiology, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and sports rehabilitation. Experiences include but are not limited to sports medicine, arthroplasty, trauma, hand, and pediatrics. An in-depth orientation and computer/ EMR training will occur during the first clinical rotation.
