Physician assistants in the University Hospital fellowship program will work with and under the supervision of emergency medicine, surgical and critical care physician assistants and physicians.

Rotations will include experience in the Emergency Department, Frank L. Mitchell Jr., MD, Trauma Center, intensive care units, and medical and surgical inpatient floors. Each rotation will offer a unique perspective and approach to caring for critically injured and seriously ill patients, including experience in performing emergent interventions. The fellowship program will provide world-class training in general and specialty adult medicine for hospital-based physician assistants.

The duration of the program is 12 months. During that time, fellows will rotate through the hospital’s multiple intensive care units including the George David Peak Memorial Burn and Wound Center and surgical and medical ICUs. Fellows also will rotate through the Emergency Department, anesthesia, and surgical and medical inpatient services.

Fellows will be trained to monitor, diagnose and treat critically ill patients. They also will receive procedural training within those subspecialties, including central lines, arterial lines, intubations, chest tube placement, thoracentesis, and paracentesis.

Fellows receive hands-on experience through classes in the Russell D. and Mary B. Shelden Clinical Simulation Center in preparation for performing supervised bedside interventions. In addition to receiving classroom and clinical experience, fellows are expected to attend and participate in grand rounds, journal club departmental lectures, conferences and lectures by guest speakers.

The experience will prepare fellows for successful careers as physician assistants in critical care and hospitalist medicine. After graduating from the program, fellows will receive a certificate of completion from the University of Missouri as a physician assistant in acute and critical care medicine.
New class starts July 2016
