The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa is proud to offer both ACGME accredited and non-accredited fellowship programs to those interested in further advancing their clinical and research training.

Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship

Our one-year ACGME accredited program in geriatric psychiatry offers training across the full spectrum of care, including geriatric medicine, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, palliative care, and long-term hospital settings. Our fellows gain clinical experience by staffing a number of different care settings. As this is a small program, details of the clinical experience can be modified to meet the fellow’s needs and interests. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Fellowship

The Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System (VA) and the Department of Psychiatry University of Iowa offer a one-year fellowship designed to advance post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) research and clinical training among psychiatrists. Fellows work closely with research mentors from the VA and Department of Psychiatry. The primary objective of this training program is to prepare individuals for academically-oriented careers in the following areas: clinical neuroscience research, PTSD treatment, and PTSD mental health services research. Other areas of research will be considered based on the availability of appropriate mentors. Fellows will devote 75 percent of their time to research and education activities and 25 percent to clinical care. Incoming fellows will be assigned to work with research mentors who best match their research interests. In special cases, a secondary mentor may be designated to advance the fellow’s research career and interest. Fellows will work with mentors on ongoing and/or independent research projects, publish and present findings, and prepare applications to funding agencies for research support. Advance clinical training and supervision in evidence-based treatment for PTSD is also provided. Clinical duties are conducted at the PTSD Clinic at the VA. Fellows will benefit from a rich educational and clinical environment at the VA and University of Iowa. Physician Assistant Training in Psychiatry Fellowship

Iowa, like many other states, is in the midst of a crisis in terms of a shortage of mental health care providers. Because no single strategy is likely to solve this problem, a multi-pronged approach is clearly needed. One piece of the solution is to optimize the quantity and quality of psychiatric extenders, like physician assistants, who can provide psychiatric services in collaboration with psychiatrists. Our one-year program exposes physician assistants who are interested in specializing in psychiatry to a broad array of disorders in a variety of settings, both inpatient and outpatient.
